Bermudan born Charlotte Hawes was my great-great grandmother. Her sister Harriet was also born there, and possibly two brothers, William and Jackson. Their parents were Harriet Revellion and James Hawes. Would there be any information about this family or individuals in your resources? Or could you give me contacts for marriage/birth registry? BTW I write from Australia, and despite hearing the Bermudan name all my life have only just located it precisely on the map. Seems an amazing place!
In appreciation.
The christening of both Charlotte and Harriet are registered un the parish church in Burmuda. I found the details in the Latrobe Library Melbourne more than 30 years ago. I wrote to Burmuda and received a photocopy of the births. It simply confirmed what I already knew with no new information. I have only recently found out that Charlottes mother was a Reveillon. I am trying to see if there is a link between her family and Jean-Baptiste Reveillon (1725-1811). Ancestry.com suggests he might be a brother of Noel, Harriettes grandfather. Do you know? I am now living in the south of France and am oleased to be communicating with another cousin. I have had correspondence wirth Rosemary Fellows.
I believe that I am related to persons that in the mid 1600s to early 1700s lived on Bermuda. Some are mentioned as from Warwick Tribe, and others are listed in records of Southampton Parish. I am not familiar with the extent (or necessarily the type) of records of the island.
The most important person for me to locate in records, as of now, is a Rebecca Basden. In court records of the Commonwealth of Virginia, she was born in about 1717 (location not given), the daughter of a James Basden. On 2 Nov 1732 (location unknown) she married a John Lowe.
I have not come across Rebecca’s mother’s name in the Virginia records. Other children of James Basden include:
Joseph Basden born before 1723 died about 1741
James Basden Jr. born before 1725 died after April 1775
Robert Basden born before 1733 died after 1751
Martha Basden born 12 Jul 1732 died after 1773
(and possibly)
Hugh Basden born before 1726 died after 1751.
When Joseph Basden died his estate was administered, by his father, in Isle of Wight County, Virginia. The first entry of one of the account records read “To proving his letter of attorney in Bermuda Currency.” I assume that this means that either, Joseph Basden had some form of estate in Bermuda and that his father had obtained a power of attorney to settle it; or that James Basden was using Bermudian currency (instead of Virginian money). Either case, points to a Bermudian connection with the family.
Assuming that their may be such a connection, the Bermuda Archives provided me with a copy of the will of a John Lightborn (6:111) of Warwick Tribe, Bermuda. He mentions that he has brothers: Joseph and Samuel Lightborn, and James Basden. He mentions two Elizabeth Basden’s; one was his sister, and the by the other an illegimate child had been sworn to him. He called each of his other heirs his “cussen.” There was one Lightborn; John, son of his brother Joseph Lightborn –by this I know this “cussen” was in reality his nephew. The remainder were all Basden’s. Five were specifically stated as children of James Basden: Elizabeth, John, James, Joseph, and Heugh. The last Basden heir was his “cussen” Rebecker Basden (paternity not stated).
The will raised several questions in regard to these Bermudians. Who specifically was Rebecker Basden’s father? Was it James Basden, and his name simply omitted. Was James Basden a (Half) brother of John Lightborn, or perhaps a brother-in-law? If James Basden was a half-brother, who was their mother? If James Basden was actually a brother-in-law, instead of brother, was the named sister Elizabeth Basden, James Basden’s wife.
I need to establish the paternity of this Rebecker Basden, and prove whether or not she could be my ancestor. I have tried using Hallett’s transcription of various parish registers to no avail. Some Basden’s are in the Southampton (baptismal) Register, but they are children of a William and a Samuel Basden. I understand from the archivist in Hamilton that this register is in a poor state.
Can you help me answer these questions? I don’t know if you charge a fee, but if so, could you either accept a U.S. postal money order, or a wire transfer.
I’ve tried looking in other records for James Basden’s. I found that one, from Bermuda, had property stolen from him by the pirate Charles Vane, on 14 April 1718. It appears that this may have include vessels, which opens up the idea that Basden may have been a mariner.
Another record I have come across is that a James Basden married an Elizabeth Ishmael, on 14 Apr 1711 in Christ’s Church Parish, Barbados.
I do not know if there were several James Basden’s, or if they are all the same person.
Thank you for your help,
David Powell

See additional comments.
I am trying to find if my ancestor Rebecca Basden, born about 1717, was born in Bermuda. She was the daughter of a James Basden, and in 1730-31 they were living in Virginia.
The Bermuda Archives supplied me with the will of John Lightborn of Warwick Tribe (1725). Lightborn was either a “cussen” or an uncle of a Rebecca, and he was either a “brother” or maybe a brother-in-law of a James Basden.
I know Basden’s were in the Southampton Register in the late 1690’s, but the Archives indicates it’s not in an ideal state.
Also, Is there a marriage register index for the island? I found a marriage in Barbados for a James Basden to an Elizabeth Ishmael in 1711. I dont know if there are the same James Basden or not.
Can someone prove if I have roots in Bermuda!

This is a followup question to that above.
Are their collateral records that may have been produced due to the probate of John Lightborn’s 1725 will. He left bequests of land to nephews who may have been minors at the time. I would assume that quardians had to be appointed, etc. and that there should be record of how they disposed of the land before (presumedly) coming to mainland America.
Thanks,

Hi I’m researching my husbands father’s family and am stuck. On the maternal sideI have a Joseph W Lamb who had a son Albert Ernest Lamb dob Feb 18, 1882. I would like to know who Joseph’s wife is and anything about his family. Also Albert married Isabella S. M. O’Connor and we know nothing of her family. Also on the Paternal side I have a Curtis (Charles) Hall born sometime after 1900 that I have no information on at all. Any help would be wonderful as I want to pass on our genealogy to future generations. Thank you.
Hi, My mother was the daughter of Mom Issy (dec’d)and Albert Lambe(deceased), I never new my great grandfather. They had 3 children Moppy (Griselda) who was married to Uncle Curtis (both deceased) – I don’t much about him either except that he married Aunt Moppy and they had had 15/16 children majority of whom have passed leaving Diana Young (bermuda)and Richard (Stubby) Hall who lives in the US and Jimmy lives in England. Emily Paynter married Charles D Paynter (both deceased) had one son, my dad, Albert Paynter (dec’d 15 Jun 2002), he married Helene Richardson and they had my brother (Albert Paynter married with one son and four g/boys) and myself Lucinda (prefer Cindy) O’Brien married to George O’Brien Sr. we have one daughter and a granddaughter and I have from a previous marriage two sons (Daniel (his son Del-Che) and Gregon (his son Trace), Mom passed 15 Jun 2013 same time as my dad 4:45pm) and Uncle Billy (I don’t now if Billy was his real name) – deceased. He stood about 7′ 2ins, thin and was a war veteran – I don’t know if he married but there is a son(?) Robert who plays in a band in Somerset and his wife – children (Rosheen (?) and Bobby Lambe and I think another daughter). Now Mom Issy, was a thin petitie lady who I would spend weekends with every so often in Devonshire. I don’t know much about her outside of that – she may have been related to a lady by the name of Annie O’Connor who lived in St. David’s, my Granny spent lots of time with her, we called her Aunt Annie. She had children: Victor, Johnny, Frederick, Granville (GI), Dorothy, Edna all deceased and many grandchildren remain.
I hope this helps in someway.

Good Day Margot,
I understand that we have some family connections. I would be grateful for any information that you may have and am willing to share any information that I may have as well.
Hello,
I am continuing my research on two of my many Bermudian ancestors – Mary Ann Tucker and Ernest Albert Hatherley. I was able to get a copy of their marriage certificate which states that Mary was 18 in Jan 1888 and Ernest was 21. I have been trying for years to find out who their parents are or where they originated but have had no luck. They were married in St George’s, and had several children, including my great grandfather Percy. Any information you could provide would be very helpful. Thanks.
Hi Tonlka,
Read this article in the R/G 30/12/14 and followed the information regarding the BNL. I saw your post on the site which peeked my interest, since Percy Hatherley (married to Doris) was my grandfather. In my formative years I lived at the homestead in Dudley Hill Paget.
Some initial research shows that Percy was baptized in St. George, I need to follow up on that. Feel free to contact me by email (stpemery@aol.com). Ironic that I should see this posting almost one year to the date, have a great New Year.
I am researching my grandmother Dorothy Winifred Smith, born in 1906 in Bermuda. She married Elmer Edward James Brown on 5 June 1930 in the Wesley Methodist Church ii Pembroke, Bermuda. I would like to find out more information about DOROTHY WINIFRED SMITH. She later married William Terrence Smith of Bermuda. Any information would be very helpful. Thank you,
Hello,
I have been trying to research my family history for over a year now. I have bits of information but, nothing is really solid. I know that my grandmother’s father was born Vivian Percival Brangman in Bermuda and at some point he left and traveled to New York-this is all I know for sure.
I have done some on-line research and the first thing out of place I noticed was that on a 1940 census he put that he was from Massachusetts this is incorrect according to family members.
On another note, I have heard different things from my grandmother (now deceased) and her sisters (one deceased the other is over 95 years old). Some of the different things I’ve heard include:
His mother was from the Virgin Islands
He was Portuguese
His father was English
The Brangman surname is Scottish
He was from Somerset
He took his mother’s last name of Brangman, instead of his father’s which was Da Silva
I’ve heard and seen in black and white pictures that my great-grandfather was tall, had jet black hair, an Indian complexion and high cheekbones. I know he was not full white but, with those features I wonder how ended up with the last name Brangman which sounds of English origin to me.
Any help in my search would be much appreciated.

Hello. I just stumbled upon this website and thought I’d leave a note. I was researching the Royal Gazette archives online and discovered a land sale taking place on “Yates’s Island” which was posted to the front page of the same newspaper on Saturday, June 16, 1787. It lists “Yates’s Island” as being between Somerset and Ireland Narrows. I have an ancestor who died in Charleston, South Carolina (US) by the name of Seth Yates who I am researching and trying to find who his parents were. His obituary from Charleston, South Carolina was dated in 1810 and it indicated that he died at the age of 59 (date of birth circa 1751), and that he had been a native to Bermuda, and so the above Royal Gazette notice caught my eye. Seth was a ship’s carpenter and he apparently (according to his obituary) moved to Charleston around 1770. His wife was named Elizabeth Lennox or Lemox (I’ve seen both recorded, so I’m not certain which is correct). From what I can find, he also had a brother named Samuel who was a ship’s Captain (sailing between Charleston and the Caribbean). He was married to Deborah Clark (of Bermuda), and he died in 1793. Seth and Samuel had a brother named Joseph who died between 1780 and 1783 in Charleston, who was also a ship’s carpenter and from whom I am directly descended. He was married to Sarah Atmar. I would love to find who the parents of Seth, Samuel and Joseph Yates were.
In addition, in doing a quick online search I found that Bermuda’s “Yates’s Island” appears to be present day Boaz Island, and I am wondering if anyone could provide any history as to which “Yates” the same “Yates’s Island” might have been named after. Since I have never been able to pinpoint who the father of Seth, Samuel and Joseph was, my hope is that with Seth having been born around 1751 in Bermuda, I am hopeful that any “Yates’ data for Bermuda from the mid to late 1700’s might help me to research a trail which was previously unknown to me. I have also learned of Nathaniel Yates who was born around 1770 and who married a Mary Vesey in Bermuda on July 5, 1798. It’s my understanding that Nathaniel was also a mariner (per http://boards.ancestry.co.uk/localities.caribbean.bermuda.general/703/mb.ashx?pnt=1 ) – and that his son by the same name was a ship-builder, but other than that I have not been able to conclusively connect Nathaniel to my ancestors. My ‘Yates’ ancestors, the 3 brothers (Seth, Samuel and Joseph) had similar names among their own children which were Jeremiah, Francis, Joseph, Samuel, William, Sarah, and Eliza, if that would be of any help.
I know it might be a long shot but thought it worth reaching out via this message board. Any information or leads would be immensely appreciated.
Good morning,

Hello! I would like to request the same response be sent to me as was sent to Leigh concerning the ancestry of the three Yates brothers. My 4th great grandfather was Captain John Bonnell of Bermuda who married Mary Ann Yates in Charleston, SC. Both families had ancestry in Bermuda, and I would love to have any information about each of those families. Captain John Bonnells is buried in Charleston along with his wife at First Baptist Church downtown. THANKYOU so much! Helen
One of my ancestors, John William Ozias Oddy, married Susan Jane Musson (daughter of Horatio Musson and Althea nee Driver) on 17th Dec 1859 at St Anne’s, Southampton, Bermuda. They had 7 children. I have the basic details of the baptisms of the children, but would like to be able to see the actual documents of those baptisms and John & Susan’s marriage, and burials. I’ve searched and searched but cannot find them anywhere online. How can I get hold of any of these documents so I have proof that I’m chasing the right people!
Thanks

Hello,
My great grandmother, Alice Clark, descends from a Clark family who immigrated from England to Bermuda before coming to America. Our ancestor, Michael Clark, reportedly died on 05 Oct 1678 at Christ Church, Bermuda. He was married to a Margaret Yarrett who died in 1679 or 1680 in Christ Church, Bermuda. One of their sons, Micajah Clark married a Sallie Ann Moorman. I believe the Moorman’s were also immigrants to Bermuda from England. Sallie Ann’s father was a Captain Zachariah Moorman. Would you please let me know if your archives contain any information on these families?
Sincerely yours,
William McCulloch

Hello
Just wondering what the response was to William McCulloch’s inquiry regarding the Clark Family that left England, then went to Barbados before heading to VA.

The Bermuda National Library was unable to assist with this query; the Bermuda records do not contain information for the rest of the Islands of the Caribbean. While there was obvious movement between the British-held islands, I know of no central collection centre for documentation for that time period. The Barbados records are discussed in:
Tracing Ancestors in Barbados: a practical guide” by Geraldine Lane. Baltimore, MD : Genealogical Pub. Co.,c2006. xvi, 155 p. : ill., maps ; 23 cm. (ISBN: 978-0-8063-1765-6 – paperback)
There are several options outlined in this book that will assist you with further research in other areas of the Caribbean. Additionally you may wish to look through:
“Tracing Your West Indian Ancestors” by Guy Garnnum. Kew, Richmond, Surrey : Public Record Office, 2002. xiv, 194 p. : ill., map ; 25 cm. (ISBN: 1-903365-38-4 – paperback)
or

I was trying to find out more about my bermudan ancestors. My great great grandfather was Alexander Jones born on 1864 apparently him or someone else in my family was a light house keeper. I would like to know that. Also I want to know who his father was, I would want also want to know where they originated from for example Scotland, England, Wales, Ireland. Apparently my great grandfathers middle name is moir which is apparently Scottish so it would be nice to know what my heritage is. – Thanks!

I am searching from my Dickinson ancestors and have reason to believe my 3 and 4 times great grandfathers were living in Bermuda in the 1750-1790 time frame. The Bermuda Archives found Samuel Dickinson, who died in 1751 in Bermuda and the will was probated by his children, one of which is a Josiah. They also found that the son Josiah likely died around 1790 in Bermuda. So…..my 3 times great grandfather was a William Josiah Dickinson who we think was born around 1790-1795 and we are wondering if you have any records that could prove William Josiah was grandson of Samuel and son of Josiah? William Josiah ended up in South Carolina, marrying a Jane Caroline McMillan in 1825.
Do you have any old newspapers or other records on the Dickinson family. I wonder if they immigrated to Bermuda from England in early 1700’s. Thank you

Please take a look at the Bermuda National Library’s Digital Collection of newspapers (http://bnl.contentdm.oclc.org/) as this online collection of the Royal Gazette starts in 1784 and continues up to March 30, 1920, and may be of assistance. Hi,
I am trying to get more information about my great-grandfather Percival Brangman. I believe he was born in Somerset, Bermuda sometime around 1888 and at some point arrived in America never returning to Bermuda. He worked as a Chef and I wonder if this is how to made it to the US (perhaps working in some area on a ship). To my knowledge his mother was from the virgin islands and his father was Portuguese. With this information and his last name being Brangman; I am a little stuck.
I know their are a lot of Brangmans on the island but, I am hoping there may be something about my great-grandfather and his parents. I also wonder if their is any information about the origin of the Brangman family in Bermuda. Where did they come from? England, Scotland etc.? What did they do?
Any help is appreciated. – Thanks!

Hello
I am 3-4 great grandson of John Henry Pitman from Sandy’s Parish, mid 1700’s
I have been unable to link back further or to UK with online resources
I recently reviewed Halletts books at our local library but unclear if any of the early settler form 1670’s were linked to John Henry
an awful lot of John and Henry’s and Ann tells me I m likely on track
Any info prior to john Henry Pitman m. To Mary Tyler would be useful
Thanks

hi there, Ellen, you look to be providing some amazing information for us amateur genealogists!
I’m pottering through my family tree and the Bermuda link is a John Seymour Howell 1815-1878. His father (John Howell) came from London and returned with a young John, having married Elizabeth Burch Seymour. I have traced much of John S Howell’s Bermuda background from Elizabeth: I have linked back to William Seymour (father of Florentius, Governor); Stephen Paynter, Thomas Chaddock as early names, as well as the Hinsons and Gilbert (Ephraim). I am currently working through possible links to Burch and a couple of others.
While any comments about these would be great, my main theme at the moment is making links back to England. I have a possible for Chaddock and Paynter, but nothing for the rest (apart from a couple of Gilbert possibles). I know that there’s much chat on Ancestry about ‘royal’ Seymours, but this doesn’t seem to any water when reviewed from royalty downwards!
I wondered whether there was any specific information available about the early settlers (beyond what’s in books like Mercer’s)?
any help or advice welcome!
with kind regards
Bruce
Hi, Bruce,
Like you, I am researching the Bermuda Seymours, Chaddocks, etc., as well as Gibbs, and would love to share information. I have been unable to definitely connect any of these back to England, but not for lack of searching! If you, or anyone else, would like to compare notes, you can email me at gctodd at yahoo dot com.
I also welcome any help or advice!
Carol
Hi Bruce,
I too am researching John Seymour Howell. B. 1812 (approx) on Somerset Island, Bermuda.
