I am looking for information about and/or descendants of Theresa May Burt (nee Pascal) born in Castries, St Lucia , but who came to Bermuda and apparently married a Somerset Burt. Her children were born in Somerset – including Bertilia, Iris and Georgina.
Which Burt did she marry? What shop did she operate in Bermuda?
I am trying to find out this information as well, I am trying to sort out my family history. I do know Theresa Burt Grandson, he was able to tell me I am related to them because she would always tell him, however, he is not able to provide in detail how we are related. I don’t have any contact information for him, however, I do pass him daily. If you provide an email address, I can pass it on to him.
Am trying to locate the parents of Captain Nathaniel S. Dill who married Keturah (Kitsey) Godfrey on 20 December 1810 in Pembroke and his siblings. Also, his son Joseph Henry Dill, born 20 December 1821. I know that the children of Nathaniel and Kitsey were
Joseph Henry Dill
Audrey Stowe DIll
Susanna Dill who married John Eve 7 September 1831
Frances Sarah Dill
Sarah Love Dill
Frances Stowe Dill
I know that Joseph Henry Dill married Leonara Isabel _______ and had children. Cannot find maiden name of wife nor death date for Joseph.
I am a descendant of Susanna Dill and John Eve
Looking for William Grant Holt born St.Georges 1812. Mother “from” Bermuda, father from England(?) would like more information from surviving Holt’s still in Bermuda, or those that have traced this family, from the maternal side.
looking for the family of John Josiah Williams. Born North Caicos. but family lives in Burmuda.
Im looking for information on Eugenia Ann Hollis, she was my great great grandmother, she was born approximately 1879, in Hamilton Pembroke, Bermuda. I was able to trace her family back to her great great grandfather John Hollis who was a naval captain born in 1760 (Im not sure if he was born in Bermuda, but it seem that he spent his life there). I wanted to know though, where the family originated from, in my research about Bermuda it seems that it was colonized only a little more than 100 years before Mr. Hollis was born. Was the Hollis family part of the colonization? And where did they come from? Thank you
Emily: please contact me at the email address given above…I am the granddaughter of Eugenie Ann Hollis Payton and can provide you with much data.
I am looking for a Swan family connection that goes back to Nether Raderny, Cameron, Fife, Scotland. I had a conversation many years ago with Sir George Ratteray and we both traced our ancestry to that location. Unfortunately he passed away before I could return to Bermuda and seek further information. There is such a strong family resemblance between members of the Bermuda Swan family and my own (I am Caucasian) Swan family that I can see the connection. I have not been able to establish my ancestor who emigrated to Bermuda and married a Bermudian woman. My understanding is that he was a sea captain who plied the waters of the Caribbean from Scotland and ultimately settled in Bermuda. I would be appreciative of any genealogical information available to help me in my search. Many thanks.
Hi Margaret Swan, Sir George Ratteray was first cousin to my father and our next door neighbor. My late mother told me about a Scotish family connection but that was all she knew. Let’s keep in touch as I have a passion for our ancestry on all sides of my family. My sister is also named Margaret.
Until I hear from you, continue to want to know more about our ancestors journey to where we are today. God bless and keep you. Sincerely. HRSL

I am trying to get any genealogical information about my great-grandfather, William D. Fox, who lived in Bermuda in the mid to late 1800s. He was married to Mary Golden and they had two sons, William D. Fox, Jr. and (possibly) Anthony Fox.
William D. Fox, Jr., my grandfather, was born in Alabama in approximately 1876.
I would deeply appreciate any information about my family, or even suggestions as to other sources of genealogical information in Bermuda. I have scoured Ancestry.com for years and have hit nothing but dead ends. Any assistance is welcome!

I’m researching my family tree for my son, as I would love to be able to pass on the valuable information.
My father in law, John Southall lived in Bermuda during 1970-1975 and married a lady named Betty Kay Hunton. I am trying to track down a little more information on her if possible. All I have so far is the record of marriage. I believe they divorced and she remarried a gentleman named John Powell. Any info would be amazing.
Email me I think I can help
Hello, thanks for the response! I’m quite amazed to be honest as this was a long shot.
Unfortunately your email address wasn’t published with your post. Could you possibly email me on gill.southall84@gmail.com
Thanks again for getting in touch.
Gill
You can try to email Mr. Powell at islandtran@ibl.bm
Is there any other way I can get in touch with John Powell as his email address was not published and my email to the suggested address above was undeliverable.
I’m not sure Mr Powell checks back on this site regularly so may have missed my reply.
Kind regards
Gill

Hi
I am searching for info on my gr gr grandfather and gr gr gr grandfather.
The surname is Kelsey(but also found as Chelsey, Celsie, Kelsie). I have info that James Kelsey was born in Bermuda around 1850. It states that his father, John Kelsey, was born in Bermuda and his mother, Mary Kelsey(Buck), was born in Nova Scotia. It shows James Kelsey in a census living in Yarmouth, Nova Scotia in around 1880 with his wife Ada Thompson and child James Henry Kelsey b. 1880. James Kelsey worked on ships. I found info of him living in Nova Scotia and sailing to Bermuda as well. I also found something that says John and Mary lived in New York at some point too. I have just recently came across info(not sure if it is correct) that John was born in Bermuda.
I can’t find any other info anywhere.
HINSON FAMILY OF BERMUDA
Reference: “ A Report on the 1994 and 1995 Archaeological and Architectural Investigations of Springfield in Sandys Parish, Bermuda.” By [Dr.] John Metz [et. al.]. Prepared for the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation and Bermuda National Trust, January 2003 (Report). To be found on academia.edu.
Those researching their Hinson ancestry may have been misled by the referenced report which contains mistakes as follow:
The initial statement, “The earliest reference to Edward Hinson in Bermuda dates to 1655…” is incorrect. He signed White’s 1645 petition (signatories are listed in Hallett’s, “Early Bermuda Registers” ). Edward Hinson is also listed in Lefroy as a losing plaintiff in a 1647 suit brought against Deputy Governor Capt. Forster.
The statement that [Capt.] Cornelius Hinson and his family moved away from Sandys is correct: the statement that they moved first to Pembroke then to Southampton is incorrect. Capt. Cornelius Hinson (testator 1719/1719) did move to Pembroke and resided there until his death: it was his son [Major] Cornelius Hinson (testator 1771/1772) who moved to Southampton.
The conjecture that, of the brothers, “only Benjamin Hinson appears to have survived into the eighteenth century,” is incorrect. With the probable exception of Nicholas, the others did too and his older brother Capt. Cornelius outlived him- as emerges from a few minutes review of Hallett’s, “Early Bermuda Wills.”
Although I have not examined his will, it is clear that the statement that Benjamin [testator 1715/1716] acquired most of his brothers’ legacies is obviously incorrect. Examination of their wills reveals that Capt. Cornelius Hinson (testator 1719/1719) deeded his real estate property, prior to writing his will, to his elder son Edward (testator 1714/1715) who died relatively young and willed his real estate to his minor children [Hon.] Cornelius Hinson [50 acres in Pembroke and 25 in Sandys] and Rebecca [37.5 acres in Southampton]. Note: 50 acres was a very large land holding in Bermuda in Colonial Times, for the purposes of this discussion I have assumed that a share was 25 acres.
Note: Neither the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation nor Dr. Metz has seen fit to respond to my letter concerning the above
I am trying to piece together some family history, would there be an obituary saved online for someone who passed away in 1933? I believe the name would have been George Clark Smith.
Thank you.
Unfortunately, the Bermuda National Library’s Digital Collection of Royal Gazette newspapers only goes up to October 31, 1930 at this time. I know of no other online source for the 1930s information you are requesting. If you know the month a researcher can look through the microfilmed newspapers for an obituary. Please note to verify the date of death you should contact the Bermuda Registry General – please contact kjgibbons@gov.bm (regarding registers of births/deaths). I am researching Isaac Bedlow of New Amsterdam/New York and his descendants, and am trying to determine what, if any, connection there was between him and the Bedlow family of Smith’s Parish. Based on The Royal Gazette, Danish censuses from St. Croix, and other online resources, I can work out a fair amount about the late eighteenth and early nineteenth-century members of the family, who moved from Bermuda to St Croix, Puerto Rico, and Maine. The recurring first names Isaac and Cornelius both suggest a connection with the NY family, who were merchants and mariners. The recurring middle names Gilbert and Seymour indicate who the previous generations of Bedlows were marrying.
Unfortunately, not many earlier sources on Bermuda are available online. From Annapolis, MD, port records, I know that the “Elizabeth & Sarah” was built and registered in Bermuda in 1769, owned by Michael Burroughs and Isaac Bedlow, and that it sailed to Maryland with Cornelius Bedlow as master.
I found abstracts of the will of Richard Gilbert of Smith’s Tribe, and its 5 Nov 1713 codicil, in two sources: Mercer’s Bermuda Settlers of the 17th Century and Hereward Trott Watlington’s Family Narrative, both available in snippet form on Google Books. According to the former, by 1713 Richard Gilbert’s youngest daughter had married and is listed as Martha Brownlow, with son Isaac Brownlow. According to the latter, her married name (and her son’s) was Bedlow. Unfortunately, there is no easy way for me to determine which is correct, other than my urge to trust the latter because it fits what I am looking for. Can you offer any assistance?
If Martha Gilbert married a Bedlow, and their first son was Isaac, the chronology and naming pattern would be right for her husband to be Cornelius Bedlow, first born son of Isaac Bedlow of NY, who was born ca 1655 but disappears from NY records after signing a deed as a teenager in 1670. Presumably Gilbert Bedlow, the shipwright of Hamilton and Smith’s Parishes whose estate was being administered by Cornelius Bedlow and James Seymour Bedlow, among others, between 1792 and 1800, was Martha Gilbert Bedlow’s grandson.
Thank you,
Alec Christensen
Looking for antecedents of Dr. Joseph Hinson d. December 1783 and Dr. Nicholas Hinson of Southampton (testator 1739/1739)
The following summarizes months of (inconclusive) research. If anyone is interested in details or can help please let me know.
Dr. Joseph Hinson was father of Zaccheus Hinson, husband of Ann Jones, and others.
The Assessment of 1783-1808 indicates that, alive, he owned 14 acres (of which one from Martha Cooper) in Southampton and 28 in Warwick Parishes. Presumably, this land was inherited but from whom?
Both Martha Cooper’s 1774/1775 will and Susannah Burch’s 1776/1785 will indicate family relationships with Dr. Joseph- in the case of the latter tantalizingly undiscoverable despite review of all Cooper and Burch will abstracts.
Dr. Nicholas Hinson’s Southampton will abstract (children Gershema and Martha) mentions his brother Benjamin and nephew Joseph.
HYPOTHESIS ONLY: both Dr. Nicholas and his brother Benjamin MAY have been sons of Joseph Hinson, died intestate 1716 widow Gershema, and Dr. Joseph MAY have been the son of brother Benjamin.
Commentating on-line genealogies:
1. Too much rubbish: verify everything!!!
2. It is highly probable that Dr. Joseph was married to Sarah Cooper and not Sarah Darrell.
3. He was definitely not the son of Major Cornelius Hinson born (1707 and dead before 1771).
4. Dr. Nicholas Hinson (wife Mary Smith) was not the son Nicholas (testator 1718/1723) of Nicholas Hinson (testator 1698/1723) and Sarah Tucker Hinson Hubbard.
I will revisit this site from time to time.
Many thanks to the Bermuda National Library for making this board available.
Hypothesis proved by Dr. Nicholas Hinsons will (t 1739) and knowing wives and children of all other first Edward’s children: Dr. Joseph Hinson was son of Benjamin who was son of Joseph son of Edward. Still haven’t fathomed the Susannah Burch kinship, though.
ALSO, it appears that Captain Joseph Hinson of Charleston (lost at sea 1801) and husband of Sarah Stiles was descended from Major Cornelius’s son Joseph( c. 1707).
AND, it appears that the Joseph Hinson who married Catherine Ann Albuoy in 1813 was descended from Joseph Hinson of Hm (d int. 1717) and Miriam Ball.
Should anyone be interested in the above, I would be happy to provide back-up
I have information on a Samuel (1680-1774) and Martha (surname unknown) Cooper (1700-1775) who had four children: Sarah, Grace, Martha & George, all born Southampton, Bermuda.
I am attempting to connect my ancestor, Joseph Cooper (b: 1802-? on Bermuda) to his parents, siblings, aunts, uncles who were on Bermuda. He eventually married Sarah MacFarlane of New Brunswick, Canada & immigrated there, but not before some of their children were born on Bermuda (Susana for one).
Thank you everyone, and especially to the Bermuda National Library.
I am descendent of Joseph Cooper husband of Sara McFarlane. I am not finding his father and I am searching for more information. I am finding my own sister ship is in Bermuda and I am researching it every day. I came across this page and read what you had to say and I can find you very interesting and probably intelligent enough to give me some answers.
I look forward to your response. Iola

Good Day,
I am looking for information on the Bassett family that owned the mineral company. I believe this is the family of John J. Bassett . My great grandmother was Editha Gertrude Simons (born Bassett). Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.
Many thanks
I am trying to find information on Philip Edington who may be related to me. He supposedly was an immigrant from England in the 1700’s to Bermuda. He may have married while there and started a family. His son, Luke John, continues my line of the Edington family, I believe. If there are records concerning Philip I would like to be contacted.
I am trying to find information on James Ebenezer Swan who was born about 1856 in Bermuda the son of James Swan and ?. By 1886 he had moved to the UK and became my wife’s great grandmother’s second husband, following the death of my wife’s great grandfather.
He died in Aston, Birmingham 28 July 1925.
Any information regarding his family history before moving to the UK would be much appreciated.
Oops.
Sarah Stiles in my May 23rd 2016. posting should have read Martha Stiles [dau. Benjamin Stiles and Sarah Staples]- sorry!
Online Stiles family pedigree has a Sarah Stiles married to a Cornelius Hinson. I cannot find this Cornelius.
